Steve Martin

Operations Director. Edge Faith Community Leadership

Steve originated from Brighton, and joined the Royal Navy as a Weapons Engineer in 1979, rising to the giddy heights of Warrant Officer 1. He served on many ships and in various shore establishments throughout his 28 year career. Highlights included many 'thrilling' cold war patrols in the Iceland /Faeroes gap, involvement in numerous humanitarian relief operations (including the Boxing day Tsunami) and patrol duties during the Balkan conflict and Iran / Iraq war. His final sea going job was as the Executive Warrant Officer on HMS Chatham.

Early on in his career Steve became a Christian, and through many ups and downs tried to live out his witness in the rather challenging environment of a messdeck on board a warship! Steve left the RN in May 2007 to become the Executive Secretary of the Naval Christian Fellowship, an independent charity based in Portsmouth, which, working alongside Naval Chaplaincy service, supports and encourages Christians in their life and witness in the RN, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

In 1987 Steve married Helen (a naval nurse) and they have two sons, Ben who is a Lay Pioneer minister in Derby, (with a remit specifically for the 18-30 age group). and Sam who is in the Royal Marines Band Service currently based in Portsmouth. Steve's hobbies include music (especially if its on vinyl) , playing guitar and running (marathons!). He also drives a 30 year old VW Van and a 2.8i Capri of the same vintage!! Steve prides himself on his 'dits' which is Naval terminology for stories, and normally requires a translator to interpret all the RN slang which peppers every sentence.

He works for Edge as the Operations Director based at the office in Chesterfield.

Al Weller

Operations Support.

Al is married to Kate and has a son in secondary school. He has a big love for gathering people together around food and is known as the BBQ king! We all looked forward to his various “smoked products” at Christmas. He has a huge heart for those who need the most help which drew him to join the Edge team. After moving to Chesterfield with his family in September 2020 he took up a role providing operations support across the variety of projects locally and nationally and is also part of the Edge Faith Community leadership team.  A season ticket holder for Chesterfield FC you’ll find him in the stands on Saturdays with  a mug of Bovril cheering them on loudly!

Gemma Carneiro

Gemma is part of the Edge Faith Community Leadership team and is based in Holme Hall. Currently she runs a toddler group, alongside Katie, and together they are seeking to build a network to support parents within our Edge communities.

Gemma is married and has three small children. She is qualified as a Secondary School Maths teacher.

Gemma became a Christian as a child and from a young age has had a heart for broken and hurting people - particularly in the area of young families and children. She is super keen to see restoration for families within her community.

Gemma loves to be outdoors or in a cafe somewhere drinking tea!

Katie Meadows

Edge Faith Community Leadership

Katie is part of the Edge Faith Community leadership, and is based in Holme Hall, Chesterfield. She is a married mum of one, and currently runs the Little Stars toddler group in Holme Hall, along with Gemma, and they are working to build parenting support in the communities that Edge works in, through a partnership with Kids Matter.

Katie became a Christian as a young person, after her parents attended an Alpha Course, and then the local church, in Holme Hall. She felt called to be God’s light in places of deep brokenness and hurt, and practised as a mental health social worker for a time, before taking time off after having her daughter. She has a real heart to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the area, and to see brokenness restored. She loves all things creative, getting out in nature and a good chat over a cup of tea!
